Why We Built SaveOr
It started with a home full of trash and treasures alike, and a family left to sort out which was which.
SaveOr was started a few years after the passing of our founder’s grandmother. A widow for a few years, she left behind a home full of trash and treasures alike, and when it came time to review what to do with everything in the house, it became a strenuous time for the family.
Arguments ensued over who got what, and what should have been a positive experience — distributing items that captured her legacy — turned into disputes and competing claims over what she wanted people to have. There were items that came from her motherland of Italy, alongside an abundance of things she’d collected on trips to HomeGoods, Woolworths, and Sears. It should have been easy to sort out the provenance of everything in the estate, but it grew harder by the day under the time pressure of clearing the home for sale.
“If this is going to be a conflict, let’s just get a dumpster and clear it out.”
That was the moment the most pragmatic member of the family suggested it, just to avoid more arguments over things that clearly meant a great deal to someone. It stuck with our founder. There had to be a better way: first, to plan ahead with an inventory that could double as a personal property memorandum, and second, to build software that could help families navigate an estate clearout and division process without the conflict, while maximizing the value of everything in the home.
