What to Include in a Home Inventory Template

A good home inventory template does one job well: it makes sure that if you ever need to prove what you owned — for an insurance claim, an estate, or a move — you have the details ready instead of trying to remember them from memory.

At minimum, your template should have a column for each of the following:

  • Room or location — so items are grouped the way you'll actually look for them

  • Item description — specific enough to tell two similar items apart

  • Brand and model

  • Serial number (for electronics and appliances)

  • Purchase date

  • Purchase price

  • Estimated current value

  • Photo or video reference

That last one matters more than people expect. A list of "couch, TV, dresser" doesn't hold up nearly as well with an insurance adjuster as the same list paired with timestamped photos.

Why a Spreadsheet Template Has Limits

A free spreadsheet is a fine place to start, and SaveOr's free template above will get you organized in an afternoon. But most people run into the same three walls once they actually start filling it in:

The photo problem. Spreadsheets don't hold photos well. You end up with a folder of images in one place and a list of items in another, with no link between them — which is exactly the gap an insurance adjuster or executor will ask you to fill later.

The time problem. Typing out a full home's worth of belongings, room by room, by hand usually takes several hours spread over a few sittings. Most people start strong in the living room and lose steam by the garage.

The update problem. A spreadsheet is a snapshot. The day you buy a new TV or get rid of an old dresser, it's already out of date — and most people don't reopen the file to fix it.

A Faster Way to Build the Same Inventory

SaveOr was built to solve those three problems specifically. Instead of typing line by line, you walk through a room with your phone and take photos: SaveOr's AI identifies each item, estimates its category and value, and builds the inventory for you automatically, photo attached to every entry.

Who Actually Needs This

A home inventory isn't just an insurance precaution. It comes up in a few specific situations where having one already done saves real time and stress:

  • Insurance claims — after a fire, theft, or storm, having item-level detail (with photos) speeds up the claim and supports a higher payout

  • Estate and probate — executors need a documented list of a person's belongings, often with values, to settle an estate properly

  • Downsizing or a move — knowing exactly what you own makes it much easier to decide what to keep, sell, donate, or pass on to family

  • Divorce or major life transitions — a clear, dated record of property removes a lot of the back-and-forth

Getting Started

If you want to do it by hand, download the free template above and work through your home one room at a time — closets and garages take the longest, so save them for when you have more time.

If you'd rather skip the typing, SaveOr's app lets you build the same inventory by photographing each room, with a free 7-day trial to try it on your own home.
